Richard Kent is the owner and driving force behind the
construction of Mickley Stud although he didn't start there.
Born in 1963 in County Cork, Southern Ireland he was one of seven children,
his father was a beef farmer with a passion for breeding thoroughbreds
and Richard was given his first broodmare early in life. On leaving school
he worked with Robert Percival and then Liam Cashman for eight years and
ran the jumping stallion base at Glenview Stud before working on studs
in Western Australia.
Returning to England he was a partner in Helshaw Grange stud for 14 years
before starting to build Mickley Stud in 2004 with the horses moving in
during 2006. With his partner Claire Loyd they have two sons and two daughters.
Claire runs the sales preparation unit.
Mickley Stud comprises 600 acres of deep feeding loam, there are 150
boxes constructed so far and the stud is split into three units. One houses
the stallions then there is a foaling unit and a sales preparation complex. A new innovation
at the stud is the pre-training yard run by Steve Brookshaw where yearlings
are broken in and got going for various trainers including all Michael
Owen's.
The land is kept sweet with the help of beef cattle that fatten quickly
on the rich pasture.
Richard has been the vice chairman of the Thoroughbred Breeders Association
national hunt committee since 2001 and is a staunch supporter of the British
Breeding industry, having a real interest in pedigrees and a passionate
belief that he and his stud can only succeed and prosper, if you the clients
are successful, both in the sale ring and on the racecourse.
He looks forward to discussing your requirements regarding the mating
plans for your mare or selling your youngstock.
